Golden Eats – ChineseBites Media Event

Note: All food was complimentary, but all opinions are based on my own personal experience.

As we had a ChineseBites event at the new dessert spot a block away, ChineseBites decided we should do a double event and organized a dinner beforehand. Along with Sherman, Rick, Grace, Joyce, Jacqueline, Laurie, Nancy, Amy and Diana , we headed to Golden Eats.

The outside and even the interior didn’t really get me too interested to be honest. I sort of had low expectations going in for some reason, but as cliche as it sounds, don’t trust a book by it’s cover! We all left happy by the end of our meal that night.

Lobster with Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf 荷香龍蝦飯

First up was the Lobster with Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf which we saw many other diners order. This is one of their signature items and comes in a big wooden bucket. The sticky rice and lobster sits on top of lotus leaf. The lobster was prepared well with a nice texture to it. I found sticky rice to be slightly too hard for my liking though and wished there was more flavour from the lotus leaves.

XO Salted Egg Yolk Crab XO 金沙蟹

One of my favourites was the XO Salted Egg Yolk Crab. The egg yolk covered the crab and was not overly moist or dry. It was not overly spicy but the XO still gave that nice kick. A must order!

Peking Duck 片皮鴨

I found the Peking Duck to be just average. The skin could have been more crispy and the meat was a touch dry. However, I was addicted to the shrimp crackers beneath. I think these are homemade because they had a very strong shrimp flavour.

Lettuce Wrap 生菜包

The duck was cooked in two ways, so the second dish was the Lettuce Wrap. I quite enjoyed this and loved the crunchy chips they added to give some texture. The lettuce cups themselves were too wet though and moistened all the filling. I think they needed to dry them up a bit.

Soft Tofu Topped with Diced Seafood 瓊山豆腐

Moving on, we had the Soft Tofu Topped with Diced Seafood. This was almost like a thick soup on the top but would be great on top of a bowl of rice. The tofu itself was silky smooth and there was a generous amount of seafood and veggies.

Ox Tail in Red Wine 紅酒燴牛尾

The Ox Tail in Red Wine was sort of stew of carrots, potatoes, and ox tail cooked in red wine. I found the ox tail to be very hard to chew so I wasn’t a fan of this dish.

Eel Hot Pot 啫啫黃鱔煲

The eel in the Eel Hot Pot was cut into small chunks and the meat itself was very tender. Needless to say, there were many tiny bones so be careful when you eat this!

Lamb Hot Pot 滋補羊腩煲

The Lamb Hot Pot came with chunks of tender lamb and bean curd. I really enjoyed the flavours in this dish and thought it was executed very well overall.

House Special Spicy Clams 避風塘炒蜆

Another favourite dish of mine was the House Special Spicy Clams. Instead of using a typical black bean sauce, they had a delicious spicy sauce going on. Not overly spicy, but it did give that slight heat and we loved it. The clams were cooked to perfection!

Pan Fried Black Cod with Soy Sauce 豉油皇煎黑魚

Another favourite of mine was the Pan Fried Black Cod with Soy Sauce. THese were super crispy on the outside with the inside being very moist. Even better was that these were boneless! The sauce was super savoury!

Dark Vinegar Spareribs 銀山鎮江骨

The Dark Vinegar Spareribs came wrapped in tin foil. These were moist and sugary with a slight vinegar flavour. Slightly on the sweet side, but still delicious nonetheless.

Chicken with Sticky Rice 窩燒糯米雞

The signature dish was the Chicken with Sticky Rice. The rice had a nice crispy texture on the ends and the chicken was extremely moist with the skin being very crispy. I ended up taking my family here again a week later but we found the chicken to be smaller but it still remained the crispy the texture and everyone was satisfied. You will need to reserve this 24 hours in advance to ensure you get this dish!

Seafood and Spicy XO sauce with E-Mein

After attending the ChineseBites event, I decided to bring my family here for dinner and we ordered some of the same items along with following. The Seafood and Spicy XO Sauce with E-Mein was delicious with a load of seafood including scallops, squid and shrimp. The e-mein was al dente with a nice chew and the XO was spicy but not overbearing.

Braised Tofu with Seafood

Another item we got was the Braised Tofu with Seafood. The tofu was crispy on the outside and silky smooth in the inside. I was very surprised with the abundance of seafood it came with. Definitely worth the price and the quality was on point!

Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of dishes at Golden Eats. They are priced fairly but you get a large portion and the quality of the ingredients are on par! A great neighbourhood spot!
